ACMA proposes spectrum changes for Albury and Wagga Wagga

The ACMA proposal includes changes to the Albury license plan to facilitate the conversion of the 2AY commercial radio service from AM to FM. To enable this, spectrum will be made available for the 2REM community radio service to move from 107.3 MHz to 90.5 MHz. Additionally, a new FM infill transmitter will be established for 2REM at Culcairn.

In Wagga Wagga, the plan allows the 2WG commercial radio service to simulcast in both AM and FM. It also provides spectrum for two 2AAA community radio FM infill transmitters at Ladysmith and Uranquinty. The proposal intends for 2WG to maintain AM transmission for at least five years via a deed poll to prevent coverage loss, according to the ACMA proposal.

Sage issues mandatory security update for Digital ENDEC

Sage Alerting Systems has notified users of Sage Digital ENDECs of a mandatory security update. President Harold Price wrote that the update involves certificates issued by a Certificate Authority called eMudhra that have weak, easily guessable, private keys which could allow domain name spoofing. Price noted that IT organizations worldwide are currently blocking or removing these affected root certificates.

The free firmware update, version 96-2, also resolves SMTP email attachment compatibility issues and allows the use of certain characters in web GUI passwords. Because the software does not update automatically, users must install it manually. Price stated that this update falls under the FCC’s recent rules change requiring prompt installation of security updates.

EWTN shuts down WEWN shortwave station after 34 years

The EWTN Global Catholic Network shut down its WEWN shortwave radio station on Oct. 31 after 34 years of operation. Based in Shelby County, Ala., the station broadcast on 12050 kHz and 15610 kHz from a transmitter site atop Vandiver Mountain. Earlier this year on Aug. 13, Fr. Leonard Mary led friars and employees in annual blessings and processions at the facility.

EWTN Chairman of the Board and CEO Michael Warsaw said in a release that operating costs were high relative to the declining number of shortwave listeners and the aging facility was in need of significant and expensive repairs, which he said would not be a “prudent stewardship of our resources.” WEWN launched on Dec. 28, 1992, as EWTN’s first radio service.
